What should you do if you are involved in an auto accident and power lines have fallen and lie on your vehicle?

1.      Stay in the car. Do not assume the power line is harmless simply because it is just sitting on the car. Downed lines do not always spark, smoke, or flop around like they do on TV!

2.      Tell other people not to approach your car. You are safe in the car but the ground may be energized.

3.      If possible, and as quickly as possible, use your cell phone to call 911, report the incident, and advise the dispatcher that power lines have fallen.

4.      Wait until emergency personnel and the local utility company arrive and tell you it is safe to get out of the car.

Unless you are in imminent danger like the car being on fire, do not get out of the car. If you must get out, follow these steps:

1.      Stand on the edge of your car with your feet together and your arms close to your sides. Jump as far as you can, keeping your feet together.

2.      Do NOT step off of the car onto the ground. Never touch the car and the ground at the same time.

3.      Continue jumping away from the vehicle with your feet together. Get at least 30 feet away.

4.      Slowly slide your feet apart. If you feel a tingle, slide them back together and continue hopping away.
